The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics selected the Galaxy Explorers program as one of two youth programs to develop a media-based component of the new exhibit, Black Holes: Space Warps and Time Twists is scheduled for completion spring of 2009. Eleven Galaxy Explorers are involved in this project fulltime for three consecutive weeks from August 4th to August 22nd.

The beginning of the institute participants received enrichment on black holes and media in preparation for the major project to commence during the forthcoming weeks. One of the first projects were audio and still-image presentations via an online tool called Voicethread. These presentations are available to view here.

Later students developed black hole jokes and riddles which were converted into digital online cartoons called Bitstrips. Click link to view.

Next came time to practice the complex art of movie making. Enjoy the sample training project on Spaghettification below.

Final Video Projects

During the course of the second and third weeks 3 teams were formed to produce videos on specific aspects of black holes, all of which include interviews with real scientists and black hole experts. Their final projects are available to view by team below:

Team Event Horizon - Black Hole Quiz
Team Singularity - The Coldbear Report
Team Ergosphere - Black Hole Hunters
